How Do Gynoecolgist Check for Endometriosis

Ask for a laparoscopy! The only proven way to test for endometriosis is through a laparoscopy surgery. However, not all laparoscopies are created equally. And, not all doctors have the training to handle endometriosis. This is the only true way to check for endometriosis. However, ultrasounds are getting better. And many seasoned technicians are now able to detect lesions visually.

You may think that all OBGYNs have the training to do this minimally invasive surgery. However, you will need to find a doctor specializing in this type of surgery. Personally, I feel like this is the more challenging part of most… But, it is not.

My Personal Journey with checking for Endometriosis

Like most women with a endometriosis diagnosis, it took me years and several doctors to finally get a diagnosis. I was waiting for a doctor to take my pain seriously and take the next steps with testing for endometriosis. However, I was constantly meet with prescriptions for pain pills and birth control. What I didn’t realize is that I didn’t need and OBGYN to test me nor did I need an OBGYN to refer me to a specialist.

At the sight of any menstrual pain… call a specialist!

All I needed to do was reach out to my local institute for gynecologic care. After seeing my 6th doctor and feeling completely defeated, my mom did some research and found the Mercy Center for Gynecologic Care. I remember calling and thinking I am going to get the same results from prior doctor visits. But, after explaining the pain I was going through, they scheduled me for an appointment that week with no referral need from my OBGYN. After one appointment, I had a laprascopy surgery on the books to determine if I had endometriosis, as well as, remove any in sight.

Overall, one thing I would tell my younger self looking to get tested for endo is to go directly to a specialist at the first sight of menstrual pain! This would have saved me years of pain and probably would have helped give me more time for family planning around fertility issues tied to this disorder.

Can any OBGYN check for endometriosis?

Even though so many women deal with chronic menstrual pain, not all OBGYNs have the training to do a laparoscopy. This is a specialty among gynecologists, and it is important to know what questions to ask prior to scheduling your surgery.

Questions to ask When checking for endometriosis:

1. Do you have laparoscopic surgery training/certification?
2. During the procedure, will you be able to remove endometrial lesions?
3. Do you do excisional or ablation techniques when removing lesions?
