Endometriosis Doctor Conversation: Tackling Myths with Dr. Carey

endometriosis myths

This year marks 10 years since I found out I have endometriosis! It’s crazy to say, but I feel blessed to be on a journey with some of the strongest individuals I have ever met. This lifestyle will push you to become laser-focused on your health. The unfortunate part of this experience is there is no rule book or real guidance due to the lack of research and studies. And myths about endometriosis often spread faster than the truth. Because of this, conversations with individuals in the community who are experts in their field and/or experience on the journey is so important. For me, it was through conversations with endo sisters at a march that I heard about vitamins helping manage pain. It was also through conversations with endo sisters that I learned chemical and surgical management was a choice and not the only option.

Endometriosis Conversation with Dr. Carey

To this day, I am still learning so much with every conversation. I recently did a live on Instagram with Dr. Carey about the endometriosis lifestyle and myths about how to live with the disorder, and I left with so much to think about for my personal journey!

We talked about everyone, from the basic need to know about what endometriosis is to understanding how important lifestyle changes can help improve your experience on this journey.

One of the major things I left with after this conversation that I hope others obtained is the amount of freedom you have on this journey.

Freedom of Choice with Endometriosis

You have the power to get a second, third, and fourth opinion from a doctor. This includes seeking out a specialist without needing a recommendation from an OBGYN.

You have the ability to use natural methods on journey that will help you reach your pain-free goals.

Fertility with endometriosis looks different for every woman. You can have Stage IV endometriosis, and still become a mother if you choose. As a stage IV mom who conceived naturally, take the time to make a plan with your doctor at the beginning of your journey to help keep your peace of mind.

Pregnancy will not stop your endometriosis pain forever. It is a beautiful time of relief, and so is breastfeeding. And, one thing I learned from my conversation with Dr. Carey, the reason why my time spent breastfeeding relieved so much pain for me was because it was the release of progesterone that helped my body fight my pain symptoms.

I took away so many nuggets of information from this conversation, and I hope you do as well!

5 Endometriosis Myths

We tackled a lot on the live that is worth a deep dive, and here are a few things to note:

  1. If you don’t have surgery as an adolescent, you won’t be able to have children with endometriosis. Not true.
  2. Pregnancy can cure endometriosis. Not true.
  3. Surgery is the only option with endometriosis. Not true.
  4. Stress isn’t related to endometriosis. Not true.
  5. If I have endometriosis, I can never live a happy or normal life. Not true.
