12 Natural Inflammation Remedies

Inflammation is more than just a symptom; it’s a health concern that touches on many aspects of our lives. It’s time for us to spend some time talking about natural inflammation remedies! My journey with endometriosis first opened my eyes to inflammation’s pervasive role. Whether discussing heart health, asthma, diabetes, acne, or common colds in toddlers, inflammation often emerges as a central theme. It’s time we explore natural strategies to manage this ubiquitous health challenge.

Understanding Inflammation and Its Effects

Inflammation: Your Body’s Alarm System

The National Library of Medicine identifies chronic inflammatory diseases as leading causes of mortality worldwide. Understanding inflammation’s role is crucial in addressing these diseases. In essence, inflammation is our body’s defense mechanism. It’s a response to foreign invaders or cell damage, ideally temporary, resolving as healing occurs.

However, inflammation is not meant to last forever!

What are the types of inflammation?

Acute, Subacute and Chronic Inflammation

Inflammation is not meant to stick around, and we can naturally find relief when it does. Whenever your body experiences a problem that needs to be fixed, it sends inflammation to help fight off and heal a virus or trauma. This is a short period of time where symptoms should only last a few days is Acute Inflammation.

“Acute inflammation is how your body fights infections and helps speed up the healing process,” says Dr. Shmerling in the Havard Health article.

If your body has been fighting something for over 2 weeks, you have entered the Subacute Inflammation zone. This is that gray period of time between the Acute and Chronic Inflammation stages. Subacute lasts between 2 and 6 weeks, and your body is working overtime to get rid of the threat in your body.

After 6 weeks of your body fighting something off with inflammation, you have reached chronic inflammation levels. It is described as “slow, long-term inflammation lasting for prolonged periods of several months to years.”, NIH

Personal Journey with Inflammation

From personal experience, while in the chronic inflammation stage, your body may start to slow down, and fatigue may be something you often battle. It is easy to write this off as a byproduct of working hard, a stressful time in life, motherhood, etc. But, take it seriously! Start taking the time to practice self-care. This is the perfect time to get your yearly physical and bloodwork done to be proactive with your health.

Diet and Lifestyle Adjustments for Health

Now that we have gotten that out of the way, let’s talk about some natural ways to combat inflammation:

  1. Anti-Inflammatory Diet: Incorporate foods that are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, such as garlic, tomatoes, olive oil, green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale), nuts like almonds and walnuts, fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna, and sardines), and fruits like strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and oranges.
  2. Turmeric: This spice contains curcumin, a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
  3. Ginger: Similar to turmeric, ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and can be consumed in various forms, such as fresh, powdered, or as a tea.
  4. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish oil and flaxseeds, omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the production of molecules and substances linked to inflammation.
  5. Regular Exercise: Moderate exercise can have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. Activities like walking, swimming, or cycling can help.
  6. Adequate Sleep: Poor sleep can aggravate inflammation. Ensuring you get enough quality sleep each night is crucial.
  7. Hydration: Water is a natural detoxifier, helping to flush out inflammation-aggravating toxins.
  8. Stress Management: Techniques like meditation and yoga can effectively lower stress-induced inflammation.
  9. Probiotics: Harness the power of probiotics in yogurt and fermented foods to balance your immune system.
  10. Limiting Processed Foods and Sugar: Reducing the intake of processed foods and sugar can significantly reduce inflammation.
