Natural Hair Journey After Giving Birth

Hi Verbs! I can’t believe it has been a year since giving birth to Klay. So much has changed in a year, including my hair! I recently shared my hair journey on my InstaStories, and I figured I do an official update on my natural hair journey after giving birth.

My Natural Hair Journey Begins!

This was not an easy journey! I am use to wearing my hair in a pixie cut with a little creamy crack to keep my sleek look, but once I got pregnant I gave up my relaxer.

The goal was to gain a “mommy-ponytail”. I didn’t realize that soon after giving birth, my full bouncy hair would start falling out, and I would need to give up straightening my hair all together.

Why Women Lose Hair After Childbirth

Hair loss is something a lot of women deal with after child birth. It is all to hormones trying to level out, and it does look the same on every woman. Some women lose hair right away, while other may not experience hair loss for month after giving birth.

For me, it came 4 months after giving birth. I was still breastfeeding and taking my prenatal vitamins, and there was nothing I could do about it!

Five Months Into My Natural Hair Journey

I cut off my relaxed ends in March, and let my hair take on a life of its’ own! No relaxer, no straightening, extra moisture and a lot of love.

Let me just say, I have no problem rocking super short hair, but to loose my hair was an extreme self-esteem breaker. I didn’t know how to feel at first, but I kept at it.

I created a hair regiment that helped restore my hair and went with the flow… It’s just hair!

My Natural Hair Regiment

A good wash-and-go finger coil routine was my go-to this entire time! It has been perfect with the warm weather and stimulating hair growth.

  1. No heat!! In March, I told myself I wasn’t going to put any heat in my hair until the fall. No matter what! I had some bad hair days, but I figured it our along the way.
  2. Pre-Poo It. Before starting this hair journey, I never understood pre-poo, but now I live by it! It gives my hair extra shine and bounce.
  3. Add moisture. I lived with conditioner in my hair! When I tell you, I washed my hair at least every other day just to add conditioner… I did.
  4. Oil Up. I used oils to open my pores to promote hair growth and lock in moisture.
  5. Wash with Rice! Rice water actually worked for me. I made my own and added essential oils to balance off the smell. I would drench my hair with it in the shower and then wash my hair.

I know my hair routine with change for the Fall. And I am excited about my growth and switching things up a little. 🙂 Cheers to the Fall!!
